East Kootenay Open Recap
July 13, 2017
The second annual East Kootenay Open tennis event was a brilliant success, growing 20% over last years tournament. This past weekend saw over 50 matches played, a Saturday BBQ, draw prizes for every player and $1000 in tournament prize money! Players came from as far away as Vancouver and Edmonton to battle not only each other on the courts but also the sweltering heat. Local players Robert Oleksiuk (Men’s Singles) and Lucy Steele (Women’s Singles) both made semi final appearances losing to the eventual tournament winners Alvin Caro and Christine Lilley, both from Calgary. Alvin and Christine continued their success taking home doubles awards as well with their respective partners Mark Macconnell (Calgary) and Michelle Lewis (Edmonton).
The East Kootenay Open has quickly become the largest tennis event in eastern BC driving a new tourist market to the town of Fernie. Visiting players spoke fondly of the beautiful setting, community support and overall tournament quality. Fernie Tennis Community Association hosted the event and would like to thanks Fernie Alpine Resort for their Summit Fund sponsorship and all the local businesses that contributed to draw prizing.
